Real Wheels: Coldwater’s Paul Lyons purchased his classic from his father-in-law

COLDWATER — Paul Lyons, of Coldwater, brought his 1939 Pontiac Coupe to the Lima Auto Mall Charity Car Show in June.

He has owned the car for three years.

“My father-in-law put it together. He owned it for 15 years. I bought it from him,” said Lyons.

Pontiac introduced two bodies for the 1939 model year. The Quality Six line grafted Pontiac frontal sheetmetal onto a Chevrolet body. The same idea was applied to the two bigger Pontiacs, the De Luxe Six and De Luxe Eight, which shared their new bodies with Buick, Oldsmobile and LaSalle.

The move proved to be a good one, as 1939 production jumped to more than 140,000. The 1938 model year failed to reach 100,000 units.

Lyons says he and his wife like to cruise around in this Pontiac, going to places they’ve never been before and meeting new people.

“We drive it all the time,” Lyons said.
