Lima Senior Student aspires to nursing career

LIMA — Kimberly Dawson, 17, a senior at Lima Senior High School, is working toward a career in the nursing field. The National Honor Society student maintains a 3.9 GPA and is excited about her future.

“I want to get a nursing career started so I can become a nurse and work in a hospital under an anesthesiologist,” said Dawson.

She’s still keeping her options open on where she might attend college.

“I want to go out of state but I just got accepted to Ohio State so I’m thinking about them,” she said.

Her love of nursing started at a young age.

“When I was younger, I always watched my mom take care of people. When I was sick even when I had to go to the hospital I was going ‘that’s so amazing how you can just make me feel better and like the people that care for you and made you so much happier.’ We went in there feeling horrible. I was like … ‘this is what I want to do.’ I can definitely see myself doing this,” she said.

She’s not involved with any extracurricular activities like band or sports.

“I do like to do poetry and art on the side in my free time. I love to listen to music. I love school and I love studying. I have a passion for school, I really do. I love to learn anything I can learn. I will learn and listen all day long, ” she added.

Seeing how her mom has struggled motivates her to get an education.

“It’s important to get an education because you can’t do anything [without it]. You don’t want to be stuck in a barrier. My mom, she’s lived off of the government for my whole life and so I look at her and like that’s my motivation. I do not want to live off the government. The goal is to get off of government assistance so you can be able to live how you want to on your own, no boundaries,” she said.

Dawson hasn’t always been a Lima City School student.

“I’m happy that I did come [to Lima Senior]. I transferred from Elida at the beginning of my ninth grade year. I was scared at first but coming here was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I love the teachers. I love the way they teach. I love how they help you, like their passion. You can tell that they care about their students and they want them to succeed. I love the atmosphere. It’s just a fun atmosphere at times,” she said.
