Youth Profile: Wapakoneta student mixes math, law, swimming

WAPAKONETA — Michael Johnston lives in the Elida school district but took advantage of open enrollment and enrolled at Wapkoneta High School. He hasn’t looked back since.

“We saw this school system and this community down here and it’s just a very tight-knit family community and just the education system and really the swim team, as well, was like a wonderful opportunity and I really don’t regret at all coming down here. It’s been nothing but good to me,” Johnston said.

Johnston is hoping to attend The Ohio State University.

“I’m very math minded. I want to go to school to be a patent lawyer. I’ve always loved mathematics but I’ve always loved law as well. So to be a patent lawyer you have to have a STEM (Science, Technology, English & Math) undergrad, so I could do an engineering or mathematics or analytics my first four years and then take that to law school and do kind of a hybrid of what I enjoy studying,” he said.

Johnston is on the Wapakoneta High School Swim Team and has been a three-year state qualifier. He’s hoping to return to state this year.

“It’s just like a little family.” he said. “It’s always been different than other sports for me because you got so close and I feel like it’s not as competitive as other sports are and so you get to know kids from other area schools and develop relationships with them as well.”

Johnston is also the vice-president of the National Honor Society at Wapakoneta High School. He’s organized a special project to help those less fortunate.

“We’re trying to raise money to feed 20,000 children and It’s through a company called Feeding Children Everywhere. Right now we’re going around to different businesses and trying to raise about $8,000. We’ve got until March so we’ve got about four months left,” he said.

So far they’ve raised over $1,000, mostly trying to reach local businesses to help.

“So we’ll ask them if they want to give a percentage of sales, if it’s a smaller business, or if they want to do a flat out donation,” Johnston added.
