OTTAWA — The Putnam County Commissioners voted to approve an $81,663 payment to Poggemeyer Design Group for engineering work for Continental.
The payment is 6.12 percent of a $500,000 Neighborhood Revitalization Community Development Block Grant that the village received after receiving help from commissioners during the application process this summer.
“We were one of 11 recipients statewide out of 20-some applicants,” Continental Mayor Matt Miller said.
The grant money will be used to add new sidewalks on Main Street running toward the school as well as fixing rundown sections of sidewalk in other locations, Miller said. There are also plans to surface sections of village streets that were never surfaced and resurface sections that have worn down over the years.
Miller also said that a section of the grant money will also be used to completely remodel the park, with new equipment to be purchased. There are plans to build a modern amenity restroom in the park, as well. Miller said that is something the park never had and he is glad to have the chance to finally add it.
There are a lot of projects planned for the neighborhood revitalization grant, but Miller said there will be plenty of money to finish them all.
“We budgeted the projects to fit with the $500,000 grant,” he said, “including administrative fees like engineering costs.”
The village has two years from late Fall 2017 to late Fall 2019 to complete its projects, Miller said. Every resident of Continental is excited about receiving the grant and at the idea of having so much of the village improved because of it, he said.
“I can’t put into words they impact this will have on the village and residents going forward,” Miller said. “Half a million dollars for a community our size is substantial.”
