Youth Profile: Elida student dreams of music career

LIMA — Caden Marsee, 15, a sophomore at Elida High School, is hoping to launch a music career.

He and friend Brady Thomas have formed “Third Infinity” and have recorded several songs, some of which you can find on Google Play, Apple iTunes and many other music platforms. Some of their material is on YouTube.

“Back in 5th or 6th grade I met Brady. We went to his house and he always had a lot of music, so he made me pick up bass and I started playing on bass with him. We did a lot with music, so one day it just evolved,” he said.

His first band was Point 88, which covered other artists’ music. They released one song.

Eventually Marsee and Thomas formed Third Infinity and started developing their own songs.

Marsee is the lead singer and plays bass. As for influences, he cited several sources.

“Radiohead has been a big influence for my voice, I’ve listened to Radiohead since the beginning of hanging out with Brady. A pretty heavy influence has got to be the Beatles. I mean you’re not a musician if you don’t know who the Beatles are,” he said. Marsee also sites My Chemical Romance as another influence.

“Muse was definitely a big influence on all of our music and you can really hear that in the song “Porcelain Girl,” that was very influenced by Muse,” he said.

Categorizing the genre of music they play can be difficult.

“We’ve explored so many different types of music. I would say it’s almost kind of confusing when we release different songs because so many of them have different sounds. We just released two more songs recently, and one was almost like metal,” he said.

Marsee is hoping to learn more about music.

“I’ve considered a few different things. I dreamed about singing on stage in front of a large crowd, so I want to chase after that dream, and I do want to pursue music in college and study it further so I can make myself better as a musician,” he said.

Third Infinity, as of now, is just a studio project.

“We haven’t done a live performance yet, but we’re a two-man band, so what we’re going to have to do is either ask anyone else who would be able to learn the music or, for right now, what we’re going to do is we have a PA system so we’ll bring that with us and hook up the computer, mute the tracks that I’ll be singing and mute the tracks that Brady will be playing,” he said.

Beyond music, Marsee does have other academic interests.

“I’m really into art. I’ve been looking at an art college. It would be really cool to enter the art field. I think music is definitely my priority but those are just the other things I’ve had in mind,” he said. “Social studies has always been one of my favorite subjects and learning history and as i grew up I always wanted to be an archaeologist or paleontologist so getting into that field would be really cool just for the sake of travelling.”

Marsee also has time for sports. “I’ve done track since the fifth [grade]. I started out doing the 800-meter dash. I don’t run anymore, I’m a [discus] thrower,” he said.

Marsee recently joined the Elida football team as a defensive end, defensive tackle and offensive tackle. He’s been known to listen to his own music in the locker room before a game.

“It’s cool to listen to it. There’s a lot of different emotions that go into music. When you really want to go after something, it’s easy for me to listen to my own song, not to sound self-absorbed, but I think if you’re going to be a musician you should definitely be able to connect with your own music and to bring out those emotions that you want to bring out. Different songs bring out different emotions” he added.
