Democrats plan fundraiser

OTTOVILLE — Democrats from the region gathered Wednesday at Black Angus on Main to plan a major Democratic event, Let’s Get Fired Up For Ohio Democrats, to be held in February.

Chairmen for the Democratic Party from Defiance, Putnam, Fulton and two other counties were in attendance, stapling raffle tickets together, sorting tickets and discussing event details, all while sharing a meal.

“This will be a good event,” said Tony Wobler, chairman of the Putnam County Democrats. “We’re getting several counties together. We’re looking forward to having a good turn out.”

The party has sent invitations to statewide candidates, including all Democratic candidates for governor, treasurer, secretary of state and auditor, said Robert Heidenescher, mayor of Dupont. They have also invited the 4th and 5th Congressional Democratic candidates to the event.

Heidenescher said the party is also planning on having Boy Scouts post the colors and the Kalida High School band has been invited to play. Father Mark Hoying from St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Kalida will be doing the invocation, Heidenescher said.

Frank Michalkiewicz, chairman of the Fulton County Democratic Party, said Democratic groups have been uniting.

“Each party probably used to do their own thing,” he said. “Everyone just kind of started working together.”

Let’s Get Fired Up For Ohio Democrats is scheduled for Feb. 13 at the Kalida Knights of Columbus hall, said Heidenescher. VIP tickets will cost $100 and will include one-on-one time with a candidate of the attendee’s choice, he said. Regular tickets will cost $30 and include a meal catered by Black Angus on Main, he said.

VIP meet and greet is scheduled 5-5:30 p.m. Social hour will be 5:30-6:30 p.m., with a sirloin dinner following.

“It will be a fun event,” Wobler said, adding it’s open to everyone regardless of political party.
