PotashCorp to invest $1.4 million in Lima facility

LIMA — The PotashCorp Lima nitrogen facility is getting a safety upgrade thanks, in part, to a tax break.

Allen County Commissioners approved an enterprise zone agreement Thursday providing a 10-year, 50 percent tax abatement for a $1.4 million investment at the Lima facility.

“They’re in the process of building a new control unit,” Allen Economic Development Group President and CEO Jeff Sprague said. “They’re looking at their safety and looking after their operators, so this investment will allow them to build their new control unit, which really improves the safety out there for their employees and temporary employees.”

Enterprise zone agreements such as this one are a valuable tool in promoting investment by existing companies to help them expand their operations, leading to both job retention and expansion, Sprague said.

“We look at this as a long-term investment,” he said. “We look at this as how it can benefit both the community and the company.”

For Sprague, the investment represents a renewed commitment to the community on the part of PotashCorp, a commitment that has reaped benefits for this area.

“What history has shown is the relationship the company has with our community,” he said. “They continue to invest money in our community and they continue to give back. So they’re a great corporate partner. Not only do they employ a great deal of people out there, but they also recognize the community as a valuable place, and they continue to support a number of agencies in the community and the folks in Shawnee Township. They are a great example of what a community partner can do.”
