COLUMBUS — A Senate Republican screening committee chose State Rep. Rob McColley, R-Napoleon, to fill the vacant seat in the 1st Senate District, the majority caucus announced Tuesday night.
McColley is expected to be seated in the Senate in early December. The House Republican Caucus must appoint his successor in that chamber. McColley was in his second term representing the 81st District, which includes Putnam, Henry, Williams and a portion of Fulton counties.
The seat came open when Hite resigned amid allegations of sexual harassment from an employee of the Legislative Service Commission. The 1st District includes all or parts of 11 counties in Northwest Ohio, including Putnam, Hancock, Hardin and Van Wert counties and a northwestern chunk of Auglaize County.
McColley was chosen over state Rep. Craig Riedel, R-Defiance; Roy Klopfenstein, a Paulding County commissioner; Craig Kupferberg, the Findlay High School principal; Jeff Smalley, of Bellefontaine, and Frank Miller Jr., of Ottawa.
