LIMA — Employees of the Allen County Sheriff’s Office now have healthier eating options that were previously available, thanks to the installation of a Micro Market in the department’s break room area.
The market was installed by Firelands Vending on Sept. 18 and opened to employees of the sheriff’s department and county courts the following day.
According to Andre McConnahea, public information officer for the Sheriff’s Office, the market came about while Sheriff Matt Treglia was searching for healthier options for employees who spend between eight and 12 hours a day in the building.
Prior to the installation of the market, employees that were unable to leave the building or had very limited time were forced to choose between packing their lunch, going to a nearby fast food restaurant or eating candy and pop from a vending machine.
“As the sheriff does not want to tell people how to eat, the market was designed to have an even balance of ‘junk food’ and healthy meal options so employees can make their own choices,” said McConnahea. “The market and remodeled break room have not only served as a nice option for employees, but it has been a great morale booster as well.”
In total, the remodel and market cost about $60, which was primarily paint supplies, said McConnahea. The market coolers, shelving, software and kiosk were all supplied free of charge by Firelands Vending. A television was moved to the break room that was rarely used, and four tables were donated to the department by the Re-store of Lima.
