Lima police officer to attend exclusive academy

LIMA — Lt. Andy Green of the Lima Police Department will be one of 240 high-ranking police officers from 20 countries to spend 10 weeks at the FBI National Academy beginning Monday.

The academy will feature courses for officers in media relations, fitness in law enforcement, managing organizational change and development, investigative interviewing, spirituality and wellness issues in law enforcement practices, and promoting the law enforcement image. The FBI National Academy is located at the U.S. Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia. Only about 1 percent of officers who apply are admitted.

“The course is held only four times a year, and the students are comprised of command-level officers,” Lima Police Chief Kevin Martin said. “When you look at that kind of exclusivity and the number of people that are trying to get into the academy, the fact that Lt. Green was accepted is a tremendous statement about his abilities and the incredible job he does for the Lima Police Department.”

Green expressed excitement about this opportunity and the benefits it could bring back to the department.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity,” he said. “Just about a week ago, I got to go to the Cleveland division of the FBI and I met three other officers from Ohio that will be attending. We talked about the application process and how difficult it is to get in. Some people try for three, four or five years to get in.”

Green is the first-shift commander for the Lima Police Department and is also the department’s public information officer. He also oversees the social media program as well as the community-oriented policing program.
