Elida area crash sends 1 to hospital

ELIDA — Authorities were looking late Friday into whether alcohol played a role in traffic accident that left one person in serious condition in a local hospital.

According to the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, the accident took place around 8:30 a.m. Friday in the 6000 block of Elida Road, west of Piquad Road, when an eastbound box truck driven by Jack Spencer, no address given, was struck by a westbound compact car operated by Matthew Conaway. Conaway reportedly crossed the center line.

Conaway, whose address also was not provided, had to be cut from his car by the American Township Fire Department, a spokesperson with that department said, and was transported by the American Township rescue squad to St. Rita’s Medical Center. Spencer was also taken to St. Rita’s, where he was treated and released.

The investigation continued Friday afternoon. Elida police assisted at the scene.
