Jordan back in Lima Friday

LIMA — For the second time in a week, U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Urbana, was in Lima to discuss developments in the nation’s capital.

Jordan spoke at the Allen County Republican Party luncheon Friday at the Lima Eagles Lodge, and while his efforts on welfare reform were his main area of focus, he also touched on other issues generating attention in Washington, D.C., including the recent signing of a bill leveling sanctions on Russia, Iran and North Korea, a bill President Donald Trump described as “flawed.”

“He signed the bill,” Jordan said. “With the things Russia has done in the Ukraine and their attempts to influence our elections, those things aren’t positives. So there’s a sanctions legislation that went through the House and the Senate and was signed by the president. It’s a good bill, and I’m glad the president signed it.”

Jordan followed up by saying there needed to be “balance” when it comes to the focus on investigating Russian activities during the election, citing that as the reason for the introduction of legislation calling for a special counsel to investigate actions taken by the U.S. Attorney General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation prior to last November’s presidential election.

“(Then) FBI director (James Comey) told the American people something that was not true, and he did it at the direction of the Attorney General (Loretta Lynch),” Jordan said. “That’s not supposed to happen, and yet they did it. Why would they do that? Because they wanted Hillary Clinton to win the election.”

Concerning legislation introduced in the Senate to reform the nation’s immigration program to a merit-based system, Jordan said he has not yet seen the bill, but he expressed satisfaction with trends in immigration emerging under the Trump administration.

“There’s been a 70 percent reduction in illegal crossings,” he said. “The idea is that we’re enforcing the law, which is what the American people expect.”
