Father’s Day celebrated at Spencerville American Legion

SPENCERVILLE — Kevin Brown and his 15-year-old son, Jordan, sat down for a Father’s Day brunch on Sunday at the American Legion.

It gave them a chance to spend a little time together and enjoy a meal before the whole family was around. Jordan said it gave him a chance to hang out with his father.

The Browns were just two of about 150 people who attended the Father’s Day brunch at the American Legion Post 191 in Spencerville on Sunday. While the post is a popular brunch spot the third Sunday of each month, it also was a hit for Father’s Day.

John McJunkin, a Vietnam War veteran, joked his wife, Marcia, said they could go to eat at the post for Father’s Day. The truth be known, McJunkin is a big supporter of any cause that helps veterans, and his wife didn’t mind a bit.

“We have legion time right now, and then we will do family time,” he said.

The McJunkins’ children were visiting for the afternoon, he said.

Post Secretary and Treasurer Barbara Mulholland said the meals are a fundraiser that pays for maintenance and kitchen supplies at the post, as well as supports a scholarship fund and local sports teams.

Mulholland said brunch is held once a month except in July and August. She said it’s popular and even more so on Father’s Day. Before they began serving the meal, Mulholland said she had been contacted by several families coming in for Father’s Day.

“We all get together and do this, and we enjoy doing this. It’s a wonderful meal,” she said.

The post has been around since 1919 and has 495 members, including the veterans, the auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion. The brunch is open to the public.

Shari Moorman coordinates the cooking. She said she enjoys working with all the volunteers and has been volunteering, herself, for 25 years.

“Father’s Day is busy,” she said.
