Kalida park gets grant

KALIDA — The Four Seasons Park board received a Clean Ohio Green Spaces Grant it will be using to purchase a plot for walking trails.

The board purchased a 13-acre plot of land between Froggy Park and Four Seasons Park, Kalida Park Board President Bill Rieman said.

“It will allow us to connect our two parks and create access from the village,” he said.

When the board originally surveyed village residents one of the top suggestions people made for the park were walking trails, Rieman said. It took awhile but they can finally give the people of Kalida those trails.

“We’ll have walking paths connecting the two parks to the village, high school and library,” Rieman said.

Ronnie Kahle Sr., who used to be on the park board and is still involved in park construction, said it might be awhile before the trails are complete. The land is currently a farm with a horses.

“There’s a farmhouse there,” he said about the property. “So that will need to be demolished first.”

The fences, barn and everything will have to be removed too, Kahle said.

The Kalida Park Board also received an Ohio Department of Natural Resources Grant that will be used to improve the Froggy Park tennis courts, Rieman said.

“The pavement in the tennis courts needs to be replaced,” he said.

After the pavement is fixed the plan is to paint it so multiple different games can be played on the court, he said. Along with tennis the court will have pickle ball courts on the pavement as well as shuffle board and basketball.

The park board is also building a sledding hill near the amphitheater and lake. Kahle said when it’s finished children will be able to climb a walkway up to the hill top, sled all the way to the bottom and repeat. There is no estimated time of completion though for the hill.

“It’s all up to the state,” Kahle said. “They have a lot of regulations we have to meet before opening anything.”

Though just a mound of dirt with a rough walkway attached right now in the future this will be a sledding hill for Kalida area children to use.
