Lima students experience farm life

LIMA — About 900 Lima City Schools elementary students caught a glimpse of life on the farm Tuesday during the eighth annual Farm Day at South Science and Technology Magnet School.

The day provides students with hands-on experiences to introduce them to the world of agriculture. For many students, it is something they have never seen up close.

“Its about getting them exposure,” said South Principal Chad Fallis. “It shows the kids some of the things that go on. They also learn how food gets from farm to table and about agribusiness.”

Fallis said the exposure hopefully will spark an interest in the farming industry for some of the students.

Students also learned about farming, gardening caring for animals, conservation and much more.

Farm equipment and farm animals (chicks, ducks, horses, cows, pigs, steer, sheep, goats and rabbits) both were on display at the event. There were several hands-on activities, including a mechanical milking cow. In one activity, students used plastic straws to see how water moves through plants through capillary action.

Elida FFA students helped the younger students with the small animals and how to handle them.

“We showed them some of the facts about different breeds,” said Elida FFA President Caleb Newland. “We taught them how to hold them so you don’t hurt them and what they eat. The hope is that some of them will become interested in the farming industry in the future.”

Farm Day was started eight years ago by Lima Police Department officer Randy Kohli and Jeff Thomas, a custodian at the school.

The day is made possible thanks to donations from a number of local organizations and businesses.
