Perry selects 8 for first round of interviews

LIMA — Several Lima-area educational employees are among a list of final candidates who will be interviewed for the superintendent position at Perry High School, a position that officially will open Aug. 1.

Lima City Schools Elementary Principal Stacy Barker and High School Principal Allison Van Gorder both have been selected for the first round of interviews to be conducted by the school board. The Allen County Educational Service Center is conducting the search on behalf of the school. Bath Assistant Middle School Principal and Athletic Director Rich Dackin and Upper Scioto Valley 7-12 Principal Craig Hurley have also applied for the position. Kelly Schooler, the current Elementary Principal at Perry, has also thrown her hat into the ring.

The list of eight candidates is rounded out by Riverside Elementary Principal Mason Bryan, Fairbanks Superintendent Robert Humble and Greenville Superintendent Douglas Fries.

The position officially came open Feb. 14 when Omer Schroeder announced his retirement, effective July 31. Schroder was at the school district for 36 years, the last 10 as superintendent.

The board approved using the ESC to locate a new superintendent at a special meeting Monday. At that same meeting, the Bath school board accepted the resignation of Superintendent Dale Lewellen. Lewellen has been at Bath for six years. His last day is July 31. He takes over a new position as Licking County Educational Service Center Superintendent on Aug. 1.

Allen County Educational Service Center Steve Arnold said a big number of applicants for the Bath position are expected, reflected by recent superintendent searches. The ESC received 23 applicants for the Perry position, and received 24 for the Shawnee superintendent spot. The Shawnee school board hired retired Liberty-Benton Superintendent James Kanable as superintendent on Tuesday.

“Based on what we received for those two positions, we are expecting plenty of applicants again for the Bath spot,” Arnold said.

Arnold said the ESC began advertising the Bath position on Thursday. The tentative timetable has a May 16 application deadline. Interviews are tentatively scheduled to begin May 22, and and a selection is expected to be made June 20. The contract would begin Aug. 1.
