Youth Profile: Celina teen knows how to work with others

CELINA — Whether it is on the athletic field or at home, 14-year-old Shannon Thomas is learning early in life about what it takes to be a part of a team.

Whether it’s as a member of the junior high track or cross-country team at Celina, the day is just starting when she finishes practice or a meet that day. When she returns home, there are five younger sisters and an elder brother at home. With that many siblings, it is just another team effort.

“Sometimes it is good because you always have somebody to talk to,” Shannon said. “Sometimes, it can bother you a little bit because there are always a lot of people around and there is someone bugging you.”

Shannon took an interest in running in the sixth grade and has been dedicated to it ever since. She is a member of both the 400 and 800 meter relays, and also runs the 100 meter dash and the pole vault. Her coach has commented that she has taken to the sport effortlessly, a natural runner.

“If I wasn’t running, I would probably be at home sitting on the couch not doing anything,” Shannon said.

Shannon is also an animal lover. She has a ferret named Zippy, a conure named Ordo and a Quaker parrot named Jamie. Jamie was a rescue from the Auglaize County Humane Society. She gave Ordo a new home when a Facebook friend developed cancer and died a while after.

In her spare time, Shannon said she enjoys watching Netflix. She enjoys shows such as “One Tree Hill.” She also likes to go to the movies or to the swimming pool.

Shannon is the daughter of Jeff and B.J. Thomas.
