Lima Senior student hopes to be a physician

LIMA — In her third year of participation, Lima Senior High School junior Reilie Lyons has learned a lot about how government works.

Reilie participated in the 66th Ohio YMCA Youth & Government High School State Assembly District 1. The Youth & Government program aims to teach high school students how government works. Reilie served as secretary of the interior on the governor’s cabinet and was also elected to be Speaker of the House next year.

“I have made a lot of close friends participating,” Reilie said. “A lot of friends that I will have for a long time.”

During the three-day conference, participating students write, discuss and pass bills. Her participation did stir up an interest in politics, and she even at one point was considering it for career. However, her interests have now shifted to a career in medicine. She hopes to be a surgeon in the sports medicine field and will do some job shadowing this summer at the Orthopaedic Institute of Ohio.

Reilie also is a member of DECA, and the school advocacy group All-In. She is a member of the girl’s golf team and the choir and show choir. She volunteers at Liberty Elementary School and participates in Allen-Lima Leadership. She said she feels Lima Senior has helped her strive in many different areas and encouraged her to be successful.

“Lima Senior has opened so many paths and doors for me,” Reilie said. “I have the advantage of being accustomed to a lot of things that other students don’t have the chance to get accustomed to. It has given me an edge.

In her spare time, Reilie said she likes to spend time with her family and attend college camps.
