Walk symbolizes Christ’s sacrifice

LIMA — A crowd of about 120 people and a choir singing traditional hymns followed a man carrying a cross through downtown Lima as part of Good Friday services.

For the third consecutive year, Trinity United Methodist Church, St. Luke Lutheran Church and St. Rose Catholic Church staged the procession to symbolize Jesus Christ’s walk to his crucifixion.

“It is important for people to take the journey with Jesus to the Cross,” said the Rev. David Harris of Trinity. “A lot of time, people only participate in the joy and excitement of Easter.”

Harris said while Easter is a joyous occasion, it is important for people to remember the events leading up to it. Along the walk, Harris, and Revs. David Ross, Megan Croy and Mike Hughes, stopped periodically to read Bible verses of Christ’s journey to his crucifixion. The walk started at Trinity, went to St. Luke and finished at St. Rose. A participant carried a cross along the route and others carried fire torches. The fire was Biblically symbolic for the spirit.

“It is important to recognize the importance that the old self dies when you are saved,” Harris said. “If we die with Christ, we can recognize that.”

Participants in the procession were ferried back from St. Rose to the starting point.

“Sometimes people need more than a church service to participate,” Harris said. “This is a great way for people to come together and take a walk and learn. It is something for people to do on Good Friday and remembering Christ’s sacrifice for us.”
