Safe Community Coalition encourages a safe prom season

LIMA — The Lima-Allen County Safe Community Coalition announced that local law enforcement will have a heightened presence during upcoming prom weekends.

The coalition encourages keeping celebrations free of alcohol. Area law enforcement will have extra enforcement on the weekends of April 29 (Bluffton, Perry, Lima Central Catholic, Spencerville, Allen East), May 6 (Delphos Jefferson, Elida) and May 13 (Delphos St. John’s, Bath, Shawnee). The coalition wants to remind drivers to be cautious during these celebrations. Young drivers should take the following precautions:

•Drive responsibly. About 5,000 teenagers are injured or killed nationwide in traffic crashes in a typical prom weekend.

•Don’t text and drive.

•Drink non-alcoholic beverages.

•Drive sober.

•If a friend has been drinking, convince them to stay put and call for help.

•Don’t ride with someone who has been drinking.

•Buckle up.

•Be alert.
