Inmate found dead at Allen County jail identified as former Kenton resident

LIMA — An inmate who died Monday evening at the Allen County Justice Center was identified, but the cause of death was still undetermined.

Brady Lee Hoop, 23, of Kenton, was found unresponsive at about 5:15 p.m. Corrections officers performed CPR and used a defibrillator while waiting for EMS to respond, according to the Allen County Sheriff’s Office. Hoop was taken to St. Rita’s Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:44 p.m.

Before his death, Hoop was scheduled to be transferred to the Correctional Reception Center in Orient. He was to serve a two-year prison sentence for theft from the elderly.

In July 2015, Hoop was arrested after someone called the police saying that two individuals attempted to collect money from residents in Shawnee Township. Shawnee Township Police Department investigators said Hoop and Lima resident Joshua Hinshaw were going door to door trying to collect money under the ruse they were Shawnee High School baseball players who were raising funds for a trip to Florida. Hoop pleaded guilty to two charges of theft from the elderly, both fifth-degree felonies.

Hoop’s body has been sent to the Lucas County Coroner for an autopsy.

The investigation was being handled by the Detective Bureau at the Sheriff’s Office.
