Allen Co.: Water, sewer district combo shelved

LIMA — Efforts to create a combined water and sewer district in Allen County are being shelved for now, according to Allen County Commissioners.

In 2014, a study into consolidating the Allen Water District with county sanitation services began, examining the viability of creating a combined district like ones in use in areas like Wood County. A similar initiative in Putnam County was ended last year after failing to create a combined district.

“We met with the Sanitary Engineer (Steve Kayatin), and he provided us with a final copy of the consolidation study that they had been working on,” Allen County Commissioner Cory Noonan said. “It was during that conversation that we conveyed to him that we would table it for right now.”

Noonan emphasized that this does not eliminate the prospect of creating a combined district in the future, but it is not something that needs addressed immediately.

“We’re not going to say no forever,” he said. “There were some good things that came out of that study for Allen County, and there was some good dialogue there with the political subdivisions, but at this time, with the study and the information that was in there and hearing from our political subdivisions, it wasn’t a real strong push where it was something that needed to be done right now.”

For Noonan, the message that was received by townships and municipalities in the county was that, overall, the water and sewer situation is not to the point where it needs this kind of initiative.

“It was the commissioners’ standpoint that we could look at this study and gather the information, but it is very important for the townships, the villages, the cities to buy into this and say that this is what is needed,” he said. “There was some discussion about it, but what I heard from the subdivisions is that things are working right now.”

Noonan said the issue can be revisited.
