West Carrollton plans to hire NB superintendent

WEST CARROLLTON — The West Carrollton City Board of Education announced Tuesday that it plans to hire New Bremen Local School District superintendent Andrea Townsend as its next leader.

School board president Roberta Phillips said Townsend will be officially hired when the board meets at 5 p.m. Wednesday. According to Phillips, Townsend has accepted the position.

Townsend was selected as New Bremen’s superintendent March 30, 2015, and officially began on July 1 of that year. She replaced Howard Overman, who retired and is now serving as interim superintendent at St. Marys City School District.

The position became open after longtime West Carrollton Superintendent Rusty Clifford announced his plans to retire.

District officials said 10 candidates were under consideration for the job.

Townsend has been involved in the effort to convince New Bremen voters to approve a 8.46 mill levy for a new K-8 building, which will be on the ballot during the primary election May 2.

New Bremen school board President Tom Paul said the board had not been informed of Townsend taking the position. He said “it is preliminary at this point, so we do not have any comment.”

The next New Bremen school board meeting is scheduled for April 12. Paul said the board would likely have a special meeting at an earlier date if given notice that Townsend had agreed to take the West Carrollton position.

A call for comment to Townsend’s office had not been returned as of press time late Tuesday.
