LIMA — One week after he was scheduled to enter a plea during an emotional hearing for family of his victim, Demonta Rogers pleaded guilty to a charge over the killing of a man last year outside a bar.
Rogers, 24, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter with a gun. He faces up to 14 years in prison when he is sentenced,which is scheduled for May 5 before Judge David Cheney.
There was no yelling or emotional outbursts Friday — just a calm and mundane hearing in which Rogers sat in a black suit politely answering questions Cheney asked.
The judge ordered a background check on Rogers, which he will use to help him determine a sentence.
Rogers and Jontez P. White, 25, of Lima, were charged over the July 5 killing of 26-year-old Remeal Ingram in the parking lot of the G-Spot bar. White remains on the run. He is described as 6 foot 3 and weighing 300 pounds.
The incident started as a fight inside involving Ingram and the men. The fight appeared to end and the men went their separate ways until they got outside, police said.
The dispute reignited in the parking lot. Rogers and White then pulled guns and fired shots at Ingram, striking him once. Ingram died from his injuries.
The bar also had another shooting last year and eventually closed.
