Elida specialist to speak at conference
ELIDA — John Junkins, an intervention specialist at Elida Middle School, will address the Ohio Educational Technology Conference on Wednesday at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
An intervention specialist with more than 20 years of experience, Junkins will speak on formative assessment, in which student learning is monitored to provide ongoing feedback to instructors to help better meet the educational needs of those students.
The conference runs through Thursday, with several other Elida administrators, including middle school principal Doug Drury, planning to attend.
Lima schools staff development day to focus on tech
LIMA — Staff in the Lima City Schools will be immersed in technology at the upcoming districtwide professional development training on Thursday. There will be no school for students this day.
The “Welcome to Technology” day is a staff-driven approach for professional development in which staff will be training staff. It is designed to give people the chance to experience what it is like to be a digital learner.
The day will include sessions on topics such as podcasting, Smart Boards, Minecraft for educators, PowerPoint, Google, Twitter and library digital resources. There will also be Internet cafés, where staff will get hands-on experience. All sessions take place from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Lima Senior High School.
St. Rita’s looking for summer teen volunteers
LIMA — St. Rita’s Health Partners is now accepting applications for the 2017 Volunteen Program.
The program is aimed at high school students between 14 and 18 years of age. Participants volunteer a minimum of 40 hours over the summer months to help in various areas in St. Rita’s medical facilities. While also gaining volunteer experience, volunteens can also preview potential future careers in health care.
Services could include research projects, patient transport, clerical and administrative duties, stocking supplies, groundskeeping or creative projects.

Apollo to hold ABLE/GED orientation
LIMA — Apollo Career Center will be holding classes for its Adult Basic Literacy Education, General Educational Development and English for Speakers of Other Languages. Orientations will be held March 6 and 7 at various locations in Allen, Auglaize, Mercer, Van Wert and Paulding counties.
ABLE classes are available for free for students to update their basic literacy skills, prepare for a job search or prepare for post-secondary education. GED test preparation will also be available, and while the test costs $120, an $80 voucher is available for Apollo students to take the test.

Six businesses part of entrepreneurship trade show
LIMA — Lima Senior High School’s DECA program will host a Lima Community Entrepreneurship Trade Show before Lima Senior’s home basketball game at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lima Senior High School, 1 Spartan Way.
The show will feature six local businesses, and their exhibit booths will be set up in the area outside the gymnasium. Companies taking part include Quick as a Wink, Sara’s Sweets, Cross Hairs, Happy Daz, Beer Barrel, The Met, Anytime Fitness and Bradfield Community Center.
The booths will remain open during the first half of the game.
Lima Senior singers, musicians impress at contest
LIMA — Lima Senior High School singers and musicians took part in the Ohio Music Education Association District III Solo and Ensemble contest held recently.
Earning superior ratings in the band category were Abby White, flute solo; Keonte’ Bankston, snare drum solo; Nathan Shauf, trombone solo; Journey Seffernick, Keonte’ Bankston and Juliana Reed, percussion trio; Symphonic Band Percussion Trio; and Symphonic Band Woodwind Choir.
Earning excellent rating in the band category were Philip Korikian, Lindsey Burnett and Whitney Reed, trumpet trio.
Earning superior in the orchestra category were Alyssa Suarez, violin; Jeremiah Dew, violin and Ceyshon Huggins, viola.
Earning an excellent rating in the orchestra category were Sofia Restivo, violin.
In the vocal category, superior ratings went to Raven Cress, Kelsey Carter, Darius Collins, Claire Mericle, Brianna Wright, Grace Dorsey, Xavier Cloud, Jayla Austin, Chase Duffman, Amy Morlock, Destiny Burk, Chris Burden, Chris Burden, Hunter Smith, Hailey Bartels and J’Veahn Soles.
Earning excellent in the vocal category went to Brianna Howard, Alexis Cooper, Demetta Waller-Flores, Allecia Sawmiller, Angela Meeker, Xandra Badertscher, Peter Fike, Alyssa Suarez, Xavier Cloud and Makayla Williams.
Superior ratings for Ada musicians at regional contest
ADA — All instrumental participants from Ada High School received a rating of “superior” for their solos at the Ohio Music Education Association’s District III Solo and Ensemble Contest at Lima Senior High School on Feb. 11.
These students included Elizabeth Milks, class A on flute; Meredith Morgan, class A on marimba; Meredith Marshall, class B on trombone; Hailey Maier, class B on trumpet; Callee Young, class B on trumpet; Eli Garmon, class B on euphonium; and Jake Colwell, class B on trumpet.
Opening set for Kan Du Studios in Findlay
FINDLAY — A grand opening will be held for the new downtown headquarters of Kan Du Studios from 5-7 p.m. Feb. 24 at 318 W. Main Cross St.
The event marks the end of a two-year, $560,000 renovation of the landmark Rocking U Building. The funding came from grants from the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission, the Findlay-Hancock Community Foundation and from the Blanchard Valley Center Capital Improvement Fund.
Kan Du Studios is a division of Blanchard Valley Industries and supports Hancock County artists with developmental disabilities. Its previous location was at 329 S. Main St., Findlay.
“As a society, we have come to better understand the contributions individuals with developmental disabilities can make to a community,” Kelli Grisham, superintendent of the Hancock County Board of Developmental Disabilities, which purchased the property in 2015, said in a press release. “By making this move to a newly renovated building in the heart of downtown Findlay, Kan Du will open up opportunities for the individuals they support. It will make us a better community.”
Elida High School Musical Theater to present ‘Hairspray’
ELIDA — Elida High School Musical Theater will present its performance of the Broadway hit comedy “Hairspray” at 7:30 p.m., March 16 through 18 and 4 p.m. March 19.
Reserved seating tickets may be purchased starting Feb. 16 at Elida High School, 401 E. North St., Elida. For times, call the school office, 419-331-4115. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door.
Ticket prices for premiere seating is $10. General seating is $8, adults, $5 students.
Kindergarten registration begins at Crestview
CONVOY — The Crestview School District will hold open enrollment for kindergarten classes for the 2017-2018 school year from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 13-17 at Crestview Elementary School, 531 E. Tully St., Convoy.
At the time of registration, parents or guardians need to present the child’s original birth certificate, Social Security card, immunization record, custody papers (if applicable) and one proof of residency document, such as a mortgage statement, lease agreement, voter registration card, utility statement, bank statement or rent receipt. A post office box cannot validate residency requirements.
The child does not need to be in attendance during registration.

Mennonite Home Communities offers scholarship
BLUFFTON — Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio is accepting applications for the Barbara Fleming Memorial Nursing Scholarship.
The scholarship is meant to promote the career of nursing. The scholarship money may be used toward school-related expenses involved in obtaining a degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse, a degree as a Registered Nurse, or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
The scholarship offers a minimum award of $500 and will be paid directly to the vocational school or college where the student is enrolled.
Barbara Fleming, in whose honor the scholarship is made possible, was a trained nurse and a resident of Mennonite Memorial Home from 1997 to 2000.
