Smith: Lima not a sanctuary city

LIMA — Rumors that Lima is a sanctuary city are false, the mayor’s chief of staff said Wednesday.

Sharetta Smith, Lima Mayor David Berger’s chief of staff, addressed this issue at Berger’s weekly media briefing Wednesday following news that President Donald Trump planned to issue an executive order prohibiting federal funding allocations to so-called “sanctuary cities” that have passed legislation limiting their involvement with immigration enforcement.

“This is of concern to Lima because that legislation comes with a threat to cut federal funding that we depend on here in the city, namely federal block grant funds,” Smith said. “In addition, Lima has been rumored to be a sanctuary cities and has been placed on lists. However, we are not a sanctuary city. The Lima Police Department follows federal immigration laws, and no legislation has been enacted in the city in opposition to immigration laws.”
