Local people react to a new president

Jeremy Martin

Age: 27

Thoughts: “It’s certainly the start of a new beginning and he is entitled to a fair shot. I think the American people chose him and he’s entitled to what he was elected to do.”

Hopes: “I’m certainly looking forward to bringing jobs back to America. I’m also interested, certainly, in as he puts it ‘draining the swamp’ and keeping the lobbyists out of Washington.”

Tommy Stolly

Age: 22

Thoughts: “It is always interesting to see the peaceful transition of power. I think Donald Trump certainly is going to bring something new to the table being a Washington outsider. I hope that people are able to give him a chance. That is when our system of government functions best.”

Hopes: “For our country specifically, I would really like to see an increase in jobs coming back to our country, manufacturing in particular, especially for Ohio. I would like to see a new approach with the fight against ISIS.”

Drew Ashcraft

Age: 24

Thoughts: “I’m interested. I’m excited for something a bit new. It’s very exciting seeing someone from a business background coming in. Now we’re going to see what happens when you treat it like a business.”

“He won and he’s going to be the president. Rooting for him to fail is like rooting for the pilot of the plane you’re on to fail.”

Hopes: “I would like to see the divide decrease instead of increase.”

“I don’t know if he will succeed or not but I would like to see that he has a chance to succeed.”

Olivia Dinsmore

Age: 21

Thoughts: “Honestly, I just hope it all works out. Some want him to fail and say everyone will learn. I don’t think that’s a good idea. I want him to succeed so the country succeeds.”

Hopes: “I definitely hope economy wise he succeeds. I think that was why a lot of people leaned toward him.”

“He was a successful businessman and obviously knows how to do things and be successful.”

Sierra Burnett

Age: 30

Thoughts: “I just don’t think it’s a good idea for our country. I never liked him. I just don’t think he’s good for the job. He has no political background.”

Hopes: “I hope he does some of the things he says he’s going to do. Maybe fix the health care system. Just don’t take it away.”

Melody Painter

Age: 62

Thoughts: “The main thing with me is they do something as far as the illegal immigrants. My thing is I’m not saying they should not be allowed to come to this country but they should not get more than our veterans do.”

“He has never been in anything political. He’s a businessman and now he’s going to run my country. He has a short fuse and temper and that’s kind of scary, too.”

Hopes: “I hope he changes his way, as far as how he talks to people. I have never seen candidates talk this way.”

Lewanna Freytag

Age: 54

Thoughts: “I hope it’s a better world than it is today. I hope he can make it a better world. I didn’t vote for him. He’s going in and he’s got a job to do. I hope he does it right.”

Hopes: “I hope we get better health care. A better economy. I hope for world peace.”

Samjhana Gaire

Editor’s note: Gaire has been in this country one year.

Age: 30

Thoughts: “I hope for a better America especially for immigrants. America is full of immigrants. They are expecting Trump will do better for all of us.”

Hope: “I know he’s a good businessman. He’s done a good job with his business. I hope he can do a better job as president.”

Bruce Bradshaw

Age: 58

Thoughts: “I’m actually very happy about it. I think our country has gone down the wrong road over the last eight years. Some of the things implemented were very unfair. He’s got a long road ahead of him. There are so many things that are wrong with this country right now.”

“Putting a business person in this position who has already been very successful over the years is a good thing because he’s been there, he’s done that.”

Hopes: “The biggest problem every president has is the Congress willing to work with him. The House, the Senate. I think those guys need to pull together. They need to quit their fighting, their bickering, their arguing.”

“Give this guy a chance. I gave Obama a chance. I didn’t vote for him but I gave him a chance. Everyone needs to give this gentleman a chance. If he succeeds, it’s great for all of us.”

Ron Boughan

Age: 69

Thoughts: “I think it’s going to bring freedom to the country and more prosperity.”

Hopes: “I think it’s a whole new world. I think it will be better for now on.”

Skyler Irons

Age: 30

Thoughts: “He wasn’t the president I voted for but no matter what you can’t change who the president is going to be. I do hope he gets in there and does a wonderful job.”

Hopes: “With the repeal of Obamacare, I do hope we find some solution for affordable health care for people especially as a small business owner. It’s pretty expensive.”

Bob Cooper

Age: 88

Thoughts: “Trump’s not afraid to take on the big companies to bring jobs back to the U.S., and we need that. He’s fearless. He’ll fight to do what’s right.”

Hopes: “All Americans will give him a chance.”
