Bluffton to reveal students portraying mascot

BLUFFTON — Bluffton University is holding a reveal event to name students who don the suit of J. Denny and Jenny Beaver mascots. The reveal will take place at 1 p.m. Jan. 28 during the women’s and men’s games against Rose-Hulman, in the Sommer Center at Bluffton University.

Throughout the year, the two mascots can be found on the campus at admission, advancement and community events. They cheer student athletes at sporting events. Several university students portray the beaver couple, and the chosen few must pass a selection process that includes a written application, an in-person interview, and an audition in the suit.

University of Findlay graduate talks cyberbullying

FINDLAY — University of Findlay graduate student Bailey Poland will discuss cyberbullying at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the University’s Ritz Auditorium, and at 11 a.m. Jan. 30 at Owens Community College’s Findlay campus, 3200 Bright Road. This is the subject of her book, “Haters: Harassment, Abuse and Violence Online.” This presentation will focus on cyberbullying in grades K-12.

Published in the fall, Poland’s book highlights her experiences and other women’s experiences with online harassment and abuse from men.

Poland will read from her book, speak on the topic and take audience questions.

Bluffton University students to report on travelling abroad

BLUFFTON — Bluffton University students who studied abroad will report on their fall 2016 semester experiences studying in Guatemala, Washington, D.C., and Spain, during two different sessions Jan. 31.

The first session is planned at 11 a.m. Jan. 31 in Yoder Recital Hall, on the campus of Bluffton University, 280 W. College Ave. This session will focus on those students who traveled to Guatemala.

The second session will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 31 in Yoder Recital Hall. Students from Washington, D.C., and Spain will share their experiences.

Both sessions are free and open to the public.

ONU faculty members receive health grant for research

ADA — Ohio Northern faculty members Dr. Boyd Rorabaugh and Dr. Phillip Zoladz have received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to study the impact of chronic psychological stress on the heart. Their work has implications for patients who have heart attacks while struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Rorabaugh is associate professor of pharmacology and cell biology. He is the primary investigator. Zoladz is associate professor of psychology, and is co-investigator.

The grant, in the amount of $411,453, began in December and is expected to take three years to complete.

The project will open up learning opportunities for ONU students who will be involved in the research.

Area students named to University of New Haven dean’s list

WEST HAVEN, Conn. — Two local students have been named to the dean’s list at the University of New Haven for the Fall 2016 semester.

Zoe Irene Laird, of Ada, and Tyler Joseph Schlagetter, of Sidney, have been named to this list.

The dean’s list honors undergraduates who earn a grade point average of 3.5 or better during the semester.

Local students join College Republicans at Ashland

ASHLAND — Two Lima residents have joined the College Republicans at Ashland University.

Logan Rex is a 2014 graduate of Bath High School and is the son of Randy and Kimberly Rex, of Lima.

Molly Scott is a 2013 graduate of Shawnee High School and is the daughter of Roger and Mary Scott, of Lima.

The purpose of College Republicans at Ashland University is to promote Republican ideals, introduce members to political activism and encourage involvement in political campaigns. The group also works to encourage voter registration.

Boyes jons dean’s list at Cedarville University

LIMA — Kelsy Boyes, daughter of Michael and Tracy Boyes, of Lima, has been named to the Cedarville University Dean’s Honor List for the 2016 fall semester. Boyes is a freshman majoring in chemistry. She is a 2016 graduate of Shawnee High School.

To be named to the Cedarville University Dean’s Honor List, a student must earn a minimum of 3.75 GPA for the semester.

Area residents named to Goshen College dean’s List

GOSHEN, Ind. — Goshen College released its Dean’s List for the fall 2016 semester 2016. This list includes students earning at least a 3.75 GPA, while completing at least 12 hours of course work for a letter grade.

Area residents included in this dean’s list included Julian Harnish and Jill Steinmetz, both of Bluffton; Eliana Neufeld Basinger, of Findlay; and Christian Grider, of Huntsville.

Local students make Dean’s List at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN — Two local students have been named to the fall semester Dean’s List at Youngstown State University.

John Rembis, of Kenton, is an advertising and pre-dental hygiene major. Brooke Stewart, of Mount Victory, is a pre-dental hygiene major.

Spartan bowling team raising autism awareness

LIMA — The Lima Senior High School Varsity and JV boys bowling teams will be wearing special shirts this weekend to raise awareness for autism.

One of the bowlers on the team suffers from Autism Spectrum Disorder, which is what drove the team to do this. The team has also met others with autism while competing against schools this season.

Local businesses are supporting the effort and paid for the new shirts.

The teams will be competing from 9:45 a.m. to noon Saturday at 20th Century Lanes on South Main Street.

Local students named to Muskingum University Dean’s List

NEW CONCORD — Several local students have been named to Muskingum University’s fall semester Dean’s List.

These students include: Jordan Risner, of Huntsville; Emily Francis, of Russia; Colton Wilson, of Waynesfield; and Joshua Cordell, of West Liberty.
