It’s Girl Scout cookie time

LIMA — It is time to empty that change jar to buy what we have been waiting on all year.

Girl Scout cookie season is here.

The Girl Scouts of Western Ohio held the first of three kickoff rallies for selling the cookies at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Lima in Friday. A second rally is planned for tonight at Rolling Hills Skate, Sidney, and another will be held Sunday at the Wapakoneta Family YMCA.

Girl Scout cookies sales officially began Friday with girls taking in-person and digital cookie orders. Initial sales end Jan. 29 and will be delivered Feb. 20-24, according to girlscouts.org. From March 4-21, troops will host cookie booths at locations throughout the area.

Chelle Point with the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio said this year is the 100th year nationally of cookie sales. About 100 girls from the Lima area gathered to prepare for the truly iconic event across the country.

“It is kind of a warm-up event to get the girls ready,” Point said. “They are essentially learning to run their own small business. The set goals of how much they want to sell, learn to make change and good salesmanship.”

Girl Scouts is also introducing a new flavor this year, and scouts attending had the chance to try the newest cookie in their arsenal. Chloe Miller, 11, of Elida, said she has a positive outlook for the new cookie as well as her sales.

“I almost got to 500 once,” Chloe said. “I am setting a goal to sell 500 boxes.”

Miller said selling the cookies has helped her to break out of a shell of being shy and she has gotten much more used to being around people. Ashlynn Bockey, 12, of Gomer, agreed.

“I was shy in first grade when I started,” Ashlynn said. “Now I am very bold, and I have made a lot of good friends.”

Ashlynn said she has set a lofty goal to sell 800 boxes this year, but feels it is within her reach. She said she has topped the 500 figure before.

“I am very determined,” Ashlynn said.

Point said the familiar door-to-door saleswomen will soon again be knocking on your door, and the familiar booths set up at local stores will again be around the area. The cookies are also available for sale now online by individual scouts and credit cards are accepted.
