LIMA — School buses and traffic were diverted from Lutz Road on Friday morning after a man threatened to harm himself, only to be found dead hours later.
Sheriff deputies were called to the home of 55-year-old Roy Money at 887 Lutz Road shortly after midnight. He fired several shots after deputies arrived, said Allen County Chief Deputy Jimmy Everett.
Negotiators and the SWAT team were called to the scene where they tried to talk to Money but were unsuccessful in reaching him. At least one other person had been in the house but left after calling the sheriff’s office for help, Everett said.
Everett said he did not know what Money was distraught about.
Negotiators were unable to make contact with Money and eventually a plan was formed to send a robot into the house to try to locate Money, Everett said.
“We tried numerous times to make contact and couldn’t,” Everett said.
Just after 6 a.m., the robot located Money inside his home. He had shot himself with a handgun and was dead, Everett said.
No one else was injured, Everett said.
Initially, deputies feared gunshots were fired at them but Everett said later it was determined the other shots were fired into the ceiling inside the home. He said it appears Money killed himself when deputies first got there since no other shots were heard.
Bath schools put out an alert early this morning: “Due to a police emergency, Bath buses will not be permitted to travel Lutz Rd from Stewart to Berryhill and/or Berryhill Rd.”
Everett said traffic was kept off the road as a precaution, but the roads were back open at 8 a.m.
