Wife of Democratic VP candidate speaks in Lima

LIMA — Anne Holton, wife of Democratic vice-presidential candidate Tim Kaine, addressed a group of local Democratic supporters Wednesday at the Lima campaign headquarters, hopeful to keep them enthusiastic as the campaign enters its final days.

A former judge and Virginia secretary of education, Holton told the crowd that her husband, along with presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, offer the best hope for unity and prosperity for future generations.

“We are stronger together across so many lines,” she said. “We’re stronger together across our ethnic diversity, as men and women, we’re stronger together across geographies and even across our political perspectives.”

Holton maintained that Clinton is also a stronger choice for Americans in terms of the economy, noting that Clinton hopes to bring in guaranteed sick and family leave for American workers.

“We need an economy that works for everyone, not just for those at the top,” she said. “We’re supporting a candidate that supports raising the minimum wage. We’re fighting for equal pay for women and infrastructure investments that will help build strong, high-quality jobs across the nation so everyone can share in our success.”

Holton also argued that Clinton would make a better commander-in-chief, working with allies across the globe. She said this is an important subject for her, as she has a son in the military.

“I will have a president I can trust with my son’s life,” she said. “We cannot have anyone else in those shoes on Nov. 8.”

With Ohio known as a pivotal battleground state, Holton encouraged volunteers to work hard for the Democratic ticket, and said the state could very well decide who will serve as the next president.

“The fate of the nation is on Ohio’s shoulders,” she said. “My husband said a year ago that this race would be close because we’re making history, and making history is never easy.”
