LIMA — Lima schools Superintendent Jill Ackerman told school board members that school administrators are still aiming at making sure every child shows academic growth each year as school report cards were released by the state Sept. 23.
The school received an F in achievement and also F in K-3 literacy, a category they had had some success with recently. The school also received a D in progress, despite scoring a C or better in eight of the nine district buildings. The scores were not unlike most schools in the state, which were down substantially in most school districts with the use of state tests that changed for the third time in three years.
“The state superintendent repeatedly says not to worry about it,” Ackerman said, “but I am worried about it.”
Ackerman explained the drop in K-3 literacy due to scoring criteria used. Ackerman said the lower scores also were expected because of higher expectancy.
“I am taking and dissecting the numbers,” Ackerman said. “I am not sure how the calculation works, but there were a lot of celebrations because of the value-added scores.”
Ackerman said the district is focusing on the value-added scores because they truly measure the growth of students. Both Independence Elementary and Liberty Arts Magnet received an A.
“Our main goal is for 90 percent of our student population to show one year’s growth,” Ackerman said. “That will continue to be the focus.”
