Continental students welcome fall festival with mural

CONTINENTAL — A new tradition is emerging in the village of Continental.

For the third consecutive year, Continental High School students painted a mural on Main Street in anticipation of the village’s annual fall festival.

“It is known around town now that when you see the students painting the mural, the festival is here,” said Continental art teacher Jenny Hopps. “It has become a tradition. I think they would be disappointed if we didn’t do it.”

Only students receiving an A or B in advanced art classes participate in the painting of the mural. This year, 16 high school students participated in the project.

“The kids designed it in class and did all the work,” Hopps said.

The students drew the mural out in chalk before painting it. The mural reads “2016 Festival, Eat, Drink, Dance, Enjoy. Hopps said some of the first-time students were a little apprehensive at first before realizing they could just paint over their errors. The students began working on the project at 8:40 a.m. Thursday and finished up at 2:30 p.m. For the students, they were able to appreciate the many hours they put into the mural.

“At first it was overwhelming,” said sophomore Angel Brzozowski, 16. “I didn’t know what to expect. I was mesmerized with how detailed it got. I was scared I was the one who was going to mess it up. It was great seeing how we took a plain blacktop and turned it into something amazing.”

Hopps said the painting usually remains visible on the road until the winter season, when snow begins to fall and workers begin to treat the roads.
