MIDDLE POINT — The soggy weather last weekend didn’t deter people from coming out to Huggy Bear Campground’s fifth annual Showcase of the Bands for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Event chairman Vicki Otto reported the campground raised $87,000 for St. Jude, bringing the total raised by Huggy Bear to $282,000 in a five-year period.
“You can put together an awesome event, but with weather like that, it could be a flop. But here at Huggy Bear we don’t let the rain stop us. Everybody was out there for St. Jude,” Otto said. “We had a great crowd.”
Saturday’s continual rain put a damper on outside activities, with partial clearings off and on during the day.
“Saturday it rained and stormed all afternoon, and it quit just in time to do the live auction outside. It helps to do things outside. The live auction alone brought in $28,000,” Otto said. “Once the rain stopped so many people came out.”
Otto was quick to praise the bands and the people who gave donations.
“We are just so thankful for the support and people who gave donations and prizes,” she said. “The bands played through some of the rain and we had awesome bands. We appreciate that they volunteered their time and were there all day with us,” Otto said.
Huggy Bear will be holding next year’s Showcase of Bands on July 21 and 22.
“We are backing it up a couple of weeks next year to avoid Wetzel and the fairs. We are trying to find a time that works for everyone,” Otto said.
