WAPAKONETA — While all good things must come to an end, it is good to go out with a bang.
The Auglaize County Fair in Wapakoneta wrapped up Saturday with a busy slate of events all day long, drawing large crowds throughout the day.
Featured events Saturday included extreme bull riding, a corn hole tournament, WAR wrestling, a woodcarver auction, noted Christian recording artist Guy Penrod, a baggo tournament and the Moon City Nationals NTPA Grand National Tractor Pull.
Crowds remained steady throughout the week for the fair. On Saturday, the 500-seat gospel tent spilled out beyond capacity for the Guy Penrod show. An even larger crowd was expected for Nashville Crush, a popular local band that has played at the Auglaize County Fair for several years.
“Nashville crush actually got their big start here at the Auglaize County Fair in the Country Star playoffs,” said Auglaize County Fair Manager Fred Piehl. “They bring a great crowd and they like playing here, and we like having them.”
The junior fair also had plenty going on also, with the 4-H dog show, the best dressed animal contest and animal calling contest.
The fair did have a few unwanted attractions also, with an alleged sex offense on Monday that was still under investigation and a demolition derby driver who possibly had a heart attack during the event Thursday. Piehl said that the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office and other personnel were quick to keep matters under control.
“The sheriff has done a great job,” Piehl said. “It has been very calm and we had no problems in the campgrounds. There were very few problems at all.”
The fair set an attendance record Wednesday and going into the final day overall attendance was up from a year ago.
“We have had excellent weather and things have been going on from one end of the grounds to the other,” Piehl said. “It has been in the low 80s with a nice breeze and no humidity today, so I think we will end up with a very successful fair.”
