LIMA — For Carlisha McCullough and Vanessa Andrews, the adult prom held at the Veterans Memorial Civic and Convention Center on Saturday was like a chance to recapture their youth.
Andrews is McCullough’s mother-in-law. However, they both shared one thing in common, they both missed their senior proms.
“I just didn’t go,” McCullough, 35, of Lima, said. “I missed my prom and I thought, ‘Here is my chance.’”
Andrews, who is 55, graduated from Danville High School in Danville, Illinois. She did well in school and graduated a year early, so she did not get the chance to go to her senior prom.
“I just wanted to see what it is like,” Andrews said. “It is a chance to go back to our younger years. That was a long time ago.”
It was the first year for the event sponsored by D.U. Entertainment in Lima. Owner Daryl Upshaw said he hopes to make the event a tradition.
“Its something new and different,” Upshaw said. “Other cities have done something like this and it had not been done in Lima before. We plan on making this a yearly event.”
Upshaw said they were expecting about 300 people for the prom. Among the guests were people from the 1996 Lima Senior class reunion, as well as attendees from local businesses such as The Procter & Gamble Co. and Honda Motor Co. Music was provided by the band Goodfellows and DJ IQ.
Jordan and Stephanie Kellam were excited to have a night to have some fun. The couple attended to help celebrate their one year anniversary. They were married in September. They even planned on “letting loose” a little, and had scheduled a designated driver to pick them up after the event.
“I think adults sometimes get bored,” Stephanie Kellam said. “A lot of events that are held are scheduled for teens or children. This is for adults. We get to be little kids again. You get so busy with your kids and this is a chance to rekindle our relationship.”
Jordan said he was pleasantly surprised with the event.
“Our prom looked nice, but it was basically a decorated gymnasium,” he said. “They have done a great job here. It was much more than I expected.”
