Spencerville farmers market aims to help cancer patient

SPENCERVILLE — Life has been a challenge lately for single mother Celeste Settlemire, of Spencerville, and area vendors who participate in the weekly farmers market on the corners of state Route 66 and Third Street are stepping up to help.

Settlemire, already a two-time cancer survivor, now is battling carcinoid and colon cancer. On Thursday, vendors will be offering special deals at the market and offering special items for sale to raise money for her.

“Every week we have been having a bake sale to try and help,” said market Chairwoman Gina Fox. “Now that she is facing more problems, all of the vendors were eager to help.”

Settlemire previously battled both ovarian and cervical cancer. Now battling the disease again, she is unable to work and has four children, ages 6, 11, 12 and 16. The money will be used to help pay her everyday living expenses.

In addition to special sales from the vendors, there will be giveaways, sausage sandwiches for sale, $5 hand and foot massages and a monetary donation jar. There will also be kettle corn for sale to help out.

“We are hoping that this market will exceptional so we can show Celeste that we support her through her battle,” Fox said.

Vendors at the Thursday event include produce, fruits, N&H Kettle Corn, baked goods, Thrifty One Gifts, O’Sisters Jams, Colorful Stitches, dips, spices, sauces, skin care, hair accessories, crocheted headbands, blankets and Scentsy.
