Auglaize Historical Society nets grant

LIMA — The Auglaize County Historical Society was chosen as the award recipient for a heritage tourism implementation grant.

This $6,400 grant from the Ohio Humanities Council will set many projects in motion for the Auglaize County Historical Society. One of these projects being “AUGLAIZE COUNTY-IN MOTION.” this initiative serves to intertwine multiple heritage/cultural tourism sites in the county that will represent motion and movement. The goal of this project is to show a more unified effort in interpreting the history of Auglaize County, and draw in a steady stream of visitors.

The “AUGLAIZE COUNTY-IN MOTION” narrative will be set to include programs such as the Armstrong Air & Space Museum, the Auglaize River (as an early transportation route), the Bicycle Museum of America, the Chain Migration (patterns of German settlement), Grand Lake St. Marys State park, the Miami-Erie Canal, and the Shannon Players. These programs all promote movement and motion, while bringing together different histories and cultures. The ultimate goal of the project being unification while featuring motion.

There is a great amount of work to be done, and components to be met before everything is up and running.

The designs for the initiative will be planned by Justin Bryant, graduate of Columbus College of Arts & Design. A skilled designer, Bryant has done previous work for Ohio Humanities funded projects, such as Coshocton Crossroads and LiRA: Latinos in Rural America.

There will be a presentation on Oct. 3 in Auglaize County about chain migration hosted by Dr. Timothy Andersons, an associate professor in the Department of Geography at Ohio University.
