Shawnee school board names interim superintendent

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Shawnee school board president Linda Haycock offered a heartfelt goodbye to Superintendent Mike Lamb at Monday’s school board meeting.

Lamb was found dead July 11 in the morning hours in his office. Lamb had been superintendent at the district for three years. Lamb also had served as superintendent at McComb and Perry schools previously and had been working in education for more than 40 years.

“I want to acknowledge the rough week we have had here with the unexpected loss of Mr. Lamb,” Hayocock said.

Haycock said that the district was handling the situation as best as it could, saying that staff had been “amazing at how they have handled such a heart-wrenching situation and the “stalwart efforts of the board.”

“We will make it through,” Haycock said.

Haycock said she had received numerous emails of condolence from all around the community and the state, including a letter that she read out loud from Ohio Superintendent of Public Instruction Paolo DeMaria.

“He will be deeply missed,” Haycock said.

The board approved the hiring of Don Wade as interim superintendent as the board now begins its search for a permanent replacement. Wade was the high school principal at Shawnee for 23 years before retiring in 2015. Wade will be paid $100,000 on a 225-day contract on a per-diem basis.

He has been here and knows the district,” board member Ellen Rovner said. “We are very appreciative that he is willing to do this.”

In other business, the board accepted the resignation of Jon Carpenter, who had been serving the district both as a head football coach and high school math teacher. Frank Crea, a fifth-grade teacher with Lima City Schools, was approved for a supplemental contract to coach the football team. He will remain teaching with the Lima schools.

Opportunity school teacher Kate Keller was approved to fill the open math spot created by Carpenter’s departure. The district will seek applicants for the open spot with the opportunity school.
