Storm causes downed power lines, roof damage

LIMA — A strong storm that blew through the region Wednesday night caused downed power lines, fallen tree limbs and damage to a warehouse.

At Brown Supply Co., located at 2455 Cable Court in Lima, a portion of the roof was peeled off due to a strong gust of wind. The 40-by-40-feet section of roof was blown into Cable Court before it was cleaned up. This is near LCC.

According to the National Weather Service, several trees and tree limbs were blown off in Lima as a result of the storm. Cpt. Jack McDermitt, of the Lima Fire Department, said they also responded to reports of downed power lines on West High Street, McPheron Avenue, Eureka Street, Reese Avenue and others.

Downed power lines were also found in Putnam County, though no “significant power outages” were reported, Putnam County EMA Director Michael Klear said.

“There were some smaller limbs and power lines down throughout the county in places like Leipsic, Columbus Grove and Ottawa,” Klear said, “but there was no significant damage.”

In Mercer County, large tree branches fell in the roadway near the intersection of Coldwater Creek and St. Anthony roads. The limbs were cleaned up by the county highway department, Mercer County EMA Director Mike Robbins said.

“Other than that, there were minor damages from debris flying around,” Robbins said. “One pickup truck got hit with a sign, which caused minor damage.”

Robbins said despite the heavy rains, the county experienced no flooding.

“We kind of dodged a bullet,” he said.

The National Weather Service reported a downed tree in Minster, though EMA representatives from Auglaize County did not return phone calls requesting confirmation of this report.

According to the weather service, the next chance for thunderstorms in the region is Sunday. As of Thursday evening, there was a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday night and a 50 percent chance of storms on Monday.
