Lima man sentenced for assaulting cops

LIMA — A man police initially said was a suspect in the shooting at a bar will get out of jail in the next few weeks.

Cameron Lott, 20, was sentenced to 130 days in jail on the charge of assault on a police officer, a fourth-degree felony. He was given credit for time served of at least 110 days.

Police never charged him in the March 28 shooting inside the G-Spot Bar at 126 E. North St., and officials say the matter remains under investigation to this day. Three people shot during a fight inside the bar and additional shots fired were fired outside. All survived their wounds.

Judge Jeffrey Reed also placed Lott on three years probation, ordered he not use alcohol or drugs and be frequently tested.

Lott was arrested hours after the shooting inside an apartment at 128 W. McKibben St. He fought with police inside the home and struck at least one officer in the face during a struggle.

Lott apologized for his actions.

“It was just a misunderstanding,” he said.

His attorney, Carroll Creighton, said Lott was surprised by police in the room, who woke him after he had been drinking.

“He was woken up out of a drunken stupor,” Creighton said.

Creighton said alcohol is not an excuse, and there is not a good excuse for fighting with officers but had the officer not been injured, Lott would be facing misdemeanor resisting arrest. He also said Lott has no prior felony record.

Donovan Peoples, 19, was charged in connection with the shooting with felonious assault with a gun, illegally carrying a concealed weapon, illegal possession of a firearm in a liquor permit premises and having a gun under a court sanction. His trial is scheduled for Oct. 25.

The G-Spot bar has had two shootings this year, including a murder earlier this month in the parking lot outside the bar. Police are looking for two men in connection with that killing of Remeal Ingram. The city is looking whether it can take action against the bar.
