Eats in the Streets draws large crowd

KENTON — A larger crowd that turned out for the Eats in the Streets Friday did not have to brave another downpour.

It was sunny skies for the second year of the event, drawing more than 5,000 people to downtown Kenton.

“Last year we had a lot of rain,” said event chairman Jacqualine Fitzgerald. “To give them credit, we had 3,000 people stay here even though it rained. We hve an even bigger crowd this year.”

Last year, Fitzgerald said there were six vendors, and they decided to double it for this year’s event due to long lines. The 12 vendors this year endured the same long lines.

“We will have to add at least another six more next year,” Fitzgerald said.

The event raises money for downtown improvements and revitalization to improve its cosmetic appearance.

“Downtown is making a comeback in America,” Fitzgerald said. “We want to bring life back to downtown and the historical courthouse district.”

An auction of adirondack chairs was also held to raise money for Not By Choice, an organization that helps cancer patients. While tallies were not available Friday, the auction raised $13,000 last year and Fitzgerald expected it to be close to that number again. Money raised will be used to purchase hanging flower baskets, signage and other improvements for downtown. The auction money we be used by Not By Choice to purchase wigs, gas cards, food and other items to help cancer patients and their families in their battle with cancer.

Fitzgerald said the event is good for a community get together and also brings people in from other communities.

“It is chance to bring everyone together in the community to have fun,” said Fitzgerald, “but it also attracts people from a lot of other places. We have people here from all over.”

The event also featured live bands and a car show.
