NAACP awards $500 scholarships

LIMA —Lima’s NAACP rewarded four young women for their academic achievements.

Receiving scholarships were Aejha Curtis, of Bath High School; Nakayla Simpson from Perry High School; Ashley Ejiogu from Shawnee High School; and Ariana Sherrell from Elida High School.

The applicants had to compose an essay in May on why they deserved the scholarship, their field of study, and grades.

This is the second year the local NAACP has awarded scholarships to area teens. Funding for the scholarships came from business partners and donations.

Jump-start to kindergarten registration

LIMA — Lima City Schools will hold a citywide kindergarten registration event this year from 2 to 6 p.m. Aug. 4 at Liberty Arts Magnet School, 338 W. Kibby St.

Children who will be age 5 by Aug. 1 can enroll in kindergarten. Registration is at Liberty regardless of which school a child will enroll in. Open enrollment is accepted.

Parents should bring the child’s Social Security card, immunization records, original copy of birth certificate, current physical, Medicaid or insurance card, proof of residency, and custody papers, if applicable.

Children can get physicals and immunizations while registering. Those will be provided by the staff from the Spartan Community Health Center. Parents should bring their photo ID, any medication taken by the child, and insurance card. If a child does not have insurance, there is a sliding fee scale for qualifying families. Bring proof of income for all household members. Children must have a physical before entering kindergarten.

The event will feature hot dogs, free jump ropes, games and prizes, including several chances to win bikes, backpacks full of school supplies, restaurant gift certificates and more.

The day allows parents to register their children, get questions about kindergarten, campus wear and transportation answered, and learn about kindergarten readiness and various community organizations and services available to families.
