YOUTH PROFILE: Bath student to learn from the brightest

LIMA — Bath High School senior Andrew Reynolds is looking forward to a chance to learn from some of the best when it comes to science and technology.

Andrew, 17, was selected as a delegate to attend the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders, which will take place in Lowell, Massachusetts, from June 29 to July 1.

The event is an honors program for high school students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The purpose is to inspire and motivate these students and help them map a plan to reach their goals. Andrew was nominated by Shree Bose, who is known for her work overcoming drug resistance in ovarian cancer.

The students will participate in seminars and learn from some of the best minds in the world, including 2006 winner of the Nobel Prize in physics John Mather, 2009 winner of the Presidential National Medal of Science J. Craig Venter, 2012 winner of the Nobel Prize in physics David Wineland, and pioneer astronaut Buzz Aldrin, just to name a few.

Andrew is hoping to represent the Bath community well.

“I like chemistry and physics,” Andrew said. “I want to demonstrate my leadership potential. I want to learn some steps on the path of science and technology so I can help people.”

Andrew has a 4.0 GPA and has taken several college-level classes while in school. He is interested in a career in the field of chemistry or chemical engineering. He is a member of SHINE, where students help teachers at the elementary school, the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Science Olympiad. He also participates in track in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter runs.

In his spare time, he likes to read, exercise and spend time with his family. He said his time at Bath has helped him grow.

“I love learning,” Andrew said. “At Bath, I feel I can go there and learn things, and use the connections I have made here. I love the people.”

Andrew is the son of Michael and Cindy Reynolds, of Bath Township, and he has an older sister, Kimmy, who is 19.
