The gift of giving

WASHINGTON, D.C. — For Steve and Earlene Sellers of Columbus Grove, their trip to Washington, D.C. for the fourth annual national ceremony for the Jefferson awards has been what they could only describe as a “true inspiration.”

“It is very inspiring to be here,” Earlene said of the trip. “You really see God at work.”

Seeing the couple inspired by anyone is no small statement, as they have done plenty of it themselves. The couple was selected as the Lima area representatives at the national ceremony for efforts they have put forth to help out their community. Those efforts include serving as court-appointed special advocates, taking meals to shut-ins, providing reusable sanitary pads to young girls in Haiti and Kenya and traveling to various parts of the country to aid in times of disaster.

They have traveled to help others in need every year since originally going to Gulfport, Miss. to help Hurricane Katrina victims. In what they have described as coming down to their faith, they have helped out in places such as Galveston, Texas, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Tuscaloosa, Ala.,two trips to Nashville, Tenn.

Earlene described some of the heartwarming stories they have heard from other Jefferson Award winners on their trip.

“We talked with a woman who had a son that died of cancer,” Earlene said. “She lost something valuable but it did not stop her. She now is helping other families and people who have suffered from the same type of cancer. There is a man from Ohio who builds homes for young ladies who have been involved in human trafficking.

Steve said he has been overwhelmed by the actions of some people.

“I am amazed at the things people have done,” Steve said. “We have met with people that have dealth with all kinds of things.”

The couple enjoyed an extended meeting with Sen. Sherrod Brown on Thursday at the Capitol building. They also enjoyed a walking tour of several monuments in the nation’s capitol.

“It is a trip we will truly remember,” Steve said.
