Recycling event saves electronics from landfills

LIMA — Technology consumers are always on the lookout for the newest and best devices, which begs the question of what happens with all the outdated devices of yesteryear, or even yesterday, given technology’s rapid advances.

Saturday’s electronics and appliance recycling event at the North Central Ohio Solid Waste District’s Lima location provided a solution to that problem, giving residents from Allen, Champaign, Hardin, Madison, Shelby and Union counties the chance to safely dispose of old televisions, computers, VCRs, cell phones and more, confident in the knowledge that they would not end up taking up space in a landfill.

“We’ve had over 250 cars come through,” district executive director Dennis Baker said. “We get a lot of TVs because nobody wants the old-type TVs. Lately, we’ve been getting a lot more flatscreens. I don’t think they’re as durable as the old kind.”

While many may think these older devices have no use, Baker noted that recycling these items can greatly increase their usefulness.

“By recycling them, it can create a job,” he said. “We disassemble anything we can recycle, creating a commodity that can be used in another product rather than having to buy virgin materials for a new product. It just makes sense.”

In the four hours the event took place, Baker estimated two semi-trailer loads of electronics were donated, representing thousands of pounds of electronics and appliances that would otherwise take up space in a landfill.

“It’s just more convenient for people,” he said. “It’s providing a service that’s just not commonly available, and that’s what it’s all about.”

Baker noted that the district is contemplating holding another recycling day event in the fall.
