Wapakoneta raises money for Ronald McDonald House

WAPAKONETA — The pupils and staff at Wapakoneta Elementary School raised $14,773.86 this year for the Ronald McDonald House of Dayton. The school has raised an eight-year total of $124,865.29 for this worthy cause.

The school chose the Ronald McDonald House as a recipient because the students would be able to relate and the school has had both students and staff use the Ronald McDonald House. Ronald McDonald House committee members include Des Duncan, Darcy Steinke, Mary Beth Webb and Amy Burke.

Students and staff collected pull tabs throughout the year. This year 1,838 pounds, 11 ounces, or 2,853,643 tabs, were collected.

Wapakoneta Elementary is a kindergarten through fourth grade school with more than 900 students and 100 staff members. The school receives support from the Wapakoneta McDonald’s owners, Jeff and Mary Monfort, along with Josh Vorhees, of McDonald’s, who provides cookies and milk and Happy Meals as classroom incentives. The Wapakoneta YMCA also provides a fun day to the top four classes that bring in the most donations.

Lima City Schools hosting Kindergarten Kamp

LIMA — The Lima City Schools is hosting Kindergarten Kamp for children entering kindergarten in the fall at any of the Lima City Schools. Students must be 5 by Aug. 1 to enroll in kindergarten.

The Kamp will be held at two sites this year: Unity Elementary School and Liberty Arts Magnet School. Kamp is from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Unity and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Liberty from July 5 to Aug. 5. The program is free. Lunch will be provided free of charge through the Lima City Schools Summer Lunch Program.

The Kamp will prepare children for kindergarten, help them develop socially appropriate classroom skills and complete hands-on projects.

Shawnee Maplewood hosting ‘Wax Museum’

LIMA — The fourth-grade students at Shawnee Maplewood School are hosting a “Wax Museum” from 9:30 to 11 a.m. today at the school, located at 1670 Wonderlick Road, Lima.

Students have been researching famous Ohioans and have created tri-fold boards with timelines, costumes and monologues that they will share with their parents and the public.

Elida kindergarten class receives letter from Obama

ELIDA — Students in Mrs. Karee Hodges’ class wrote a class letter to the President of the United States. They received a response letter, a photo of President Obama and his dogs and information about the White House.

Crestview Student Council holds Relay for Life

CONVOY — Crestview Student Council sponsored a Relay for Life for high school students and staff. There were 365 members of 83 teams composed of students and staff members who walked or ran to see which team could walk the most laps around the track.

The relay raised $3,200 for The American Cancer Society.

Student Council officers Hannah Bowen, Claire Zaleski and Leslie Skelton were the co-chairmen of the relays.

Crestview recognizes April students of the month

CONVOY — Crestview Middle and High School teachers have nominated students from each grade to receive the April Students of the Month designation. These students have shown a strong work ethic and have gone the “extra mile” in helping others in their classes. As part of their recognition, these students will be treated to a Pizza Hut lunch with their principals.

April Students of the Month include Ragen Harting, 8th grade; Lindsey Schumm, 7th grade; Emily Greulach, 6th grade; Tiffany Thompson, 8th grade; Drew Kline, 9th grade; Claire Zaleski, 12th grade; Tyler Riggenbach, 11th grade and Celina Sweet, 10th grade.

Buddelmeyer chosen to receive Hart scholarship

LEESBURG — Sarah Buddelmeyer, of Leesburg, was chosen to receive the Larry A. Hart Memorial Scholarship. She is the daughter of Joel and Amy Buddelmeyer, of Leesburg, and the granddaughter of Penny Musser, of Leesburg, and Gary and Kathy Musser, of Elida, and Jill Buddelmeyer and the late Marvin Buddelmeyer, of Lima.

The Larry A. Hart Memorial Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship that is sponsored by the Ohio Wildlife Officer’s Lodge No. 143 of the Fraternal Order of Police and The Twin Valley Rod and Gun Club in Preble County. The scholarship is available to those persons who are graduating or have graduated from an accredited high school and will enroll in an accredited college majoring in Law Enforcement or Natural Resources.

Buddelmeyer will graduate this year from Fairfield Local High School. She will be attending Coastal Carolina University to study marine science.

Convoy’s Kulwicki gives back to Crestview students

CONVOY — Greg Kulwicki presented each third grader in Ellen Jones’ class with an Accelerated Reader award.

Kulwicki volunteered weekly in Mrs. Jones’ classroom and challenged the kids. He told the third graders he would pay a penny per AR point that each student received. The kids earned a total of 4,286.2 AR points this year.

Kulwicki hopes to continue the “Penny per Point” program to the entire third grade next year.

Heritage Elementary ukulele group performed for businesses

LIMA — The ukulele group at Heritage Elementary School played music for downtown businesses on Monday as their way of saying thanks for the support to Lima City Schools.

The group played for Webb Insurance, iHeart Media, Childers Media Group and ArtSpace/Lima. Afterwards they performed in the square in downtown Lima.

Crestview recognizes kindergartners

CONVOY — Crestview Elementary hosted its annual Kindergarten Recognition Program, entitled, “All Kinds of Weather.” Kindergartners sang songs and were given certificates signifying the completion of their kindergarten year.

Allen County youth recognized

HARROD — Caden Jones, of Harrod was awarded fifth place in the Novice Market Animal Division of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association Beef Exhibitor Show Total Program. Jones won this with his Crossbred Steer. He also earned the third Overall Crossbred Steer title and was the ninth Overall Junior Showman. He is the son of Trevor and Keri Jones, of Harrod.

Ninth place honors in the Novice Market Animal Division went to Delaney Jones, of Harrod. She is the daughter of Troy and Sara Jones. She showed her Simmental steer sired by Monopoly. This steer was also the Reserve Champion Simmental Steer.

St. Peter and Paul celebrates Right to Read Week

OTTAWA — Students at St. Peter and Paul School celebrated Right to Read Week. The theme was Read Like a Champ. The students were given a goal to read 5,000 minutes which they tripled by reading 16,379 minutes. Part of the week’s events included having their Ottawa CYO girls 3-peat State Champs read to them. The CYO girls stayed and ate lunch with the children and played with them at recess.
