Lima festival season kicks off with St. Rose

LIMA — Saturday was a night for the adults to have fun. On Sunday, children got into the fun as well.

The Lima area festival season officially kicked off this weekend with the St. Rose of Lima Parish Festival. While the festival is a bit earlier than others in the area, festival co-chair Mary Paton said it is all for a good reason.

“We are the smaller of the three schools,” Paton said. “We hold ours a little bit earlier so we are not competing with other festivals to attract more people.”

The move seemed to work. Paton said the deposit from receipts made was much higher on Saturday than a year ago and they expect Sunday’s total to be bigger as well. Before the night was over, they had sold out of chicken dinners, ice cream and cakes for the cake wheel.

“It was great,” Paton said. “We had a lot of good food, good music, and we have some great volunteers.”

Saturday was adult night with a cover band, and the festival opened up to families on Sunday. Money raised from the event goes to the church’s general fund. To mix things up a little, the festival featured some different bands this year, some new rides and different activities such as Big Six Bingo.

“We just wanted to try a few different things,” Paton said.

Paton said they were thankful for help from other people outside of the church, such as volunteers from St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.

One of the most anticipated events each year for the festival is a drawing to cut St. Rose teacher Darby Bourk’s hair on the last day of school. This year, third-grader Michael Sherrick will have the honor.

Bourk said he expects to have a mohawk as his new hairdo on the last day.
