Fire causes heavy damage to Bath Township home early Sunday

BATH TOWNSHIP — A home in Bath Township suffered about $15,000 in damage during a fire Sunday.

The Bath Township Fire Department responded to the 1004 Christopher Ave. residence after a passer-by made a 911 call at 3:47 a.m. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear of the home. The home is a rental property owned by Joe Bakies, of Lima, and was unoccupied at the time.

Firefighters entered the home and extinguished the fire in about 30 minutes. The fire had spread to the attic, causing heavy smoke, heat and water damage to the home.

Fire Chief Jospeh Kitchen ruled the cause of the fire as suspicious in nature. An investigation was continuing. The Fire Department remained on the scene for about three hours.
