Shawnee police chief warns of gas pump skimmers

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Shawnee Township police warned people to be careful when using debit cards after the accounts of seven people have been compromised in the past month.

All victims discovered the unauthorized purchases through an alert from their bank or by monitoring their accounts. Detectives checked to see if cards were compromised through a skimmer at a gas station or convenience store in the area, but no illegal devices were discovered, Shawnee Township Police Chief Mike Keith reported.

Most of the illegal purchases were made in Columbus or Cincinnati. If someone questions whether a gas pump has an illegal skimmer placed inside, the person should pay inside the store or pay in cash. All suspicious activity should be reported to police, and people should monitor their accounts on a regular basis, Keith said.
